INTRODUCTION
According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), social scientists and clinicians have identified about two dozen factors that predict marital satisfaction.

Three factors contribute to the marriage triangle.

Individual Traits
These are a person’s own unique personality traits and interpersonal skills that include both positive (self-esteem, assertiveness, flexibility) and negative (depression and impulsivity) characteristics.

Couple Traits
Important to marital or couples satisfaction is possessing good communication and conflict resolution skills, the amount of time the couple has been together and how well they know each other, and whether or not they have similar values and goals.

Personal & Relationship Experience
Family background and experiences (i.e., previous marriages, children from previous marriages, the quality of parents’ marriage) and the approval and support of the relationship by others also influence satisfaction.

While all of the above contribute to feeling content and secure in a relationship, other influences, such as stress, employment (or unemployment), finances, and health may also affect it.
